About tribute
Putting together a Townes Van Zandt tribute album might sound like a really ambitious project with a lot of work involved, but for us, it was anything but. We always thought that Townes Van Zandt was one of the greatest songwriters to ever walked the Earth. We found out very quickly that there were a whole lot of people who agreed with us.
My long time friend, the Yugoslavian radio DJ Aleksandar Lazarevic (Desperado show on Radio Politika) came up with the idea of putting together a compilation of Townes Van Zandt covers in early 2006. We exchanged names of artists we wanted to ask to contribute as well as a list of existing recordings that were rare if not impossible to find. We asked musicians, managers and record labels from all around the world, and the response was overwhelming. It seemed that almost everybody we spoke with was deeply influenced by Townes and his music at one point or another. Initially we had the idea that this album should be released around the tenth anniversary of Townes' death, which put some pressure on everybody involved. We had to skip this idea, as whenever so many bands and artists are involved, trying to meet a tight deadline is bad news. It usually leads to recordings that aren't as good as they could be. and anyway, we hear that Townes really enjoyed hearing his songs get played and recorded by other musicians, especially a younger generation of musicians.
So why not do it right? '
So now that's what you're holding in your hands — a record featuring some of the best songs ever written, recorded and arranged by a bunch of fantastic musicians and Townes Van Zandt aficionados, compiled and released by devoted Townes Van Zandt fans. No need to go searching for a deeper meaning. There is none, other than bringing this fine music to you!
